With the appearance of six of the OG “Sex and the City” seasons on Netflix, there seems to have been a lot of discourse on the series on Substack. From fashion experts to New York residents, there are a LOT of people who have a LOT to say about the series, and why shouldn’t they?
I myself loved watching the movies with my mom when I was a child, and later discovered the series as a 20 something year old. The show, while being a poster-adult for New York City glamour, offered an interesting vulnerability when it came to the four women running (and sleeping) around Manhattan’s streets.
Seemingly, modern shows have yet to recreate (in my opinion) the same combination of glamour and transparency, and that’s okay! Because why seek it from fiction when we can get it from reality?
In transitioning from TV screens to computer and phone screens, I’ve also transitioned from TV to Instagram and YouTube. And with that, I’ve been able to source my new Carrie Bradshaw: Verona Farrell.
As a Stockholm IT-girl, Verona went viral for the “What People are Wearing Today” series on TikTok. Now, she’s a street-style videographer and fashion writer who travels around the world and writes for Vogue Scandinavia, focusing primarily on the series “The People Behind the Outfits”.
What makes her different for me? In all honestly, she’s fun. With her Irish accent and hungover confessions, Verona provides the perfect dose of Sex and the City-vibe vlogs on her Youtube channel.
She lives with two of her university friends in Stockholm, and spends her days writing, shopping and going to exiting food/drink locations. Her friendships with her fellow Stockholm friends, also influencers, are on full display on her Instagram page. While offering the perfect behind the scenes of her and her friends in between fashion shows, she also offers videos of one dancing on the floor and them mid-laugh at a cafe.
In essence, she’s glamour and oversharing in one, and I love her for it.
In her chunky boots and flared pants, she’s present at almost every fashion week with her even chunkier camera. Perhaps the picture above symbolises her best: she is both behind the scenes and on camera: a rare feat to achieve!
She has her own writing nook in her apartment, but also shows herself writing almost everywhere: cafes, friends’ couches and so on. And thankfully, she prioritises food over Vogue magazines, although she has both at hand.
While no classic Bradshaw Fendi baguette bag is in sight, she does rep glamour well with a classic YSL bag atop a nightclub toilet. I’m not sure whether I should feel impressed or mortified with the combination…
Regardless, Verona Farrell is admittedly my current obsession of the month. And while she might not be THE modern Carrie Bradshaw, she is MY Carrie. To each their own right?
Q: What about you? Any current media obsession?
Love,
Anastasia
